There’s good news for our daughters as we get ready for the Summer blockbuster movies! It looks like there’s going to be a serious female role model rocketing around in Iron Man 3. The video below is the latest TV spot for the movie, and the big reveal is that Gwyneth Paltrow–who’s spent the first two movies as Tony Stark’s long-suffering love interest Pepper Potts–is finally going to do some rescuing in the latest Iron Man epic. In fact, we’ve checked with our cohorts over at CelebrityWatchdog to learn that Paltrow will actually playing an established Marvel Comics character named Rescue. That seems pretty important to us, since the superheroine’s name seems like a good response to all those Marvel Comics films where the ladies have mostly needed rescuing.

The biggest offender here has been the Spider-Man movies. All the ones with Tobey Maguire pretty much had the same plot repeated for three movies, and it always ended with Kirsten Dunst screaming to be saved from the villain. Last year’s Amazing Spider-Man wasn’t quite as bad, but we’re being warned not to expect any heroics from the new character of Gwen Stacey. The Avengers gave us Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, but she seemed more like some kind of icky creation that was mainly around to give teenage boys a thrill. (Now we’re being told that the Black Widow character from the actual comics is more mature.)

Maybe we should be doing more research, but we’d rather live like ordinary moms who take their families to the movies and hope that their daughters can pick up something positive. So, color us pleased and intrigued and way supportive of the idea that Gwyneth Paltrow gets to save her boyfriend for a change. Yes, she still shows up in lingerie at some point during the trailer, but that’s showbiz. We’re just going to hope that scene is necessary for Pepper to fit into her Rescue armor and save the day. It’s still a welcome change from relying on old episodes of the Powerpuff Girls….
